FULLTEXT keys have been slowly gaining acceptance as a legitimate form of searching in the MySQL circles. Simply throwing in a FULLTEXT key on your text columns is really just the beginning to harnessing this feature. Combined with LAMP, this talk shows how you can offer a feature rich searching environment for your users.

Stump's presentation covers:

  • Current text searching options
  • Pros and cons of FULLTEXT vs. the other options
  • An overview of creating, optimizing, tweaking, and using FULLTEXT keys
  • Weighting FULLTEXT keys (ie. titles are worth more than body or meta data)
  • Using PHP to build a robust searching interface
