MySQL now provides types and functions to bring that data to the user quickly and efficiently. Together with open source technologies such as SVG, PHP, and XML, intelligent Spatial Data can now be delivered to the Web to assist in the identification of particular locations and provide solutions to the many spatially related questions that combine to define the area of Geographical Information Systems. This talk outlines the creation of an interactive Atlas of Ireland that not only uses open source software but also open source data which has been opened up to the public by MySQL's spatial extension.
