SessionWikipedia: The Cheap and Explosive Scaling with LAMP
Domas Mituzas, Support Engineer, MySQL and Wikimedia Foundation
This talk is intended for a semi-technical audience and covers Wikipedia's architecture, data management methods, and MySQL's key position in the system.
When building one of the world's top web sites it's important to do things right and learn from mistakes. Selecting the good approaches (LAMP) and working out which to reject or abandon (Web 2.0, Bit Torrent) is particularly tough when starting from a zero budget, zero staff, and a great idea, then growing to be one of the world's great information sources in just a few years with freely donated funds and volunteer staff. We have to spread and survive. This talk is about Wikipedias use of asynchronous data migrations, global content distribution, load profiling and analysis, and how it all becomes one of most powerful collaboration powerhouses. |
