Managing MySQL the Slack Way: How Google Deploys New MySQL Servers

Michael Still, Corporate Reliability Engineer, Google Inc
Grant Allen, Google, Inc.

Track: Security and Database Administration
Date: Thursday, April 26
Time: 11:50am - 12:35pm
Location: Ballroom A

Google deploys software configuration to its servers using a toolkit called Slack that it has open sourced. You can read more about Slack at http://www.sundell.net/~alan/projects/slack/ and http://www.stillhq.com/presentations/000017.html.

Slack allows you to run pre- and post-installation scripts, as well as deploying the configuration files you need to run MySQL. These scripts are used to configure the replication environment for MySQL servers.

This talk will cover how we use Slack to deploy new MySQL servers in a relatively automated manner, and how you can automate the configuration and bootstrap of new MySQL replicas. Also discussed are some lessons learned along the way, as well as areas where the current system could be improved.
