Wikipedia is not only one of most popular web sites, it is one of the most open. Same applies to its technology -- everything uses open source, free software, and there are no trade secrets. This allows disclosure of most of Wikipedia's internal technology:
- Content delivery network: caching policies, software hacks and evolution, geo-balancing
- Application tricks: profiling, load balancing, persistence with PHP, Apache tuning, MediaWiki for Big Sites
- Database environment: scale-out, replication, RAIS instead of RAID, optimizations
