GIS Geocoding with Stored Procedures in MySQL

The cost of commercial geocoding is both expensive and time consuming for large data sets. Presented will be a more cost effective, timely, and platform / programming language independent approach to geocoding. Making use of free publicly available data and written entirely inside MySQL, these stored procedures provide a simple interface for retrieving GPS points from addresses, enabling reverse lookups from GPS locations.

This discussion will include analysis of these stored procedures, latitude/longitude interpolation from points, lines, and linestrings, spatial math, data cleansing, and retrieval calculations of both distance and radius. Because address data can come in a number of different forms, these stored procedures can adapt to provide internal failover and still accommodate lookups. This library is able to process over 1,000,000 addresses in a matter of minutes and provides interpolated results that are within feet of commercially available geocoders.
