Session

Using Hibernate to Ease the Migration to Open Source Databases

Charles Lee, VP of Engineering, Hyperic

Track: Java
Date: Wednesday, April 25
Time: 5:30pm - 6:15pm
Location: Ballroom D

Hyperic undertook the exercise of migrating its data object model from EJB2 to Hibernate. The reasons for this were due to difficulties Hyperic experienced in getting its core product, Hyperic HQ, to support more databases and handle data persistence. The benefit from undergoing the migration is that customers are no longer bound to legacy databases and are free to choose an open source database like MySQL. Charles Lee, Hyperic VP of engineering, will discuss the lessons learned from this exercise and help other developers plan similar migrations. In particular, attendees will learn:
  • Why the Hibernate migration was done
  • The benefits of data abstraction
  • How it aids migration to an open source database like MySQL
