Brian Aker is the director of architecture for MySQL when he helps set direction for technology and looks for opportunities to harness and shape the MySQL database for efforts in Web, OEM, and telephony. In his copious amounts of free time he works on Apache and Perl modules, and hacks on the Asterisk Telephony System (hence, never has a working home phone number). In the past, he has been involved with projects for the Army Engineer Corps, The Virtual Hospital, Splunk, and Slashdot. He lives in Seattle with his dog Rosalynd.

John Ioannidis, the Chief Architect of Packet GENERAL, has been on the cutting edge of technology for over two decades. In 1993, John saw a growing need for network security and co-invented swIPe, the predecessor to IPsec. Now IPsec is commonly used by vendors to provide commercial security solutions. Since 1981, Mr. Jacobs has held a variety of technical and management roles at Oracle. Charles Lee

Charles Lee is co-founder and vice-president of engineering of Hyperic. Prior to co-founding Hyperic, Lee was a senior software engineer at Covalent. There, he built Covalent's configuration management product for Apache (CMP), and he spearheaded and architected the Covalent Application Manager (CAM). Before Covalent, Lee developed a document management system for retail store build- outs based on open-source technology at WiseConnect. Rasmus Lerdorf

Rasmus Lerdorf is known for having gotten the PHP project off the ground in 1995, the mod_info Apache module, and he can be blamed for the ANSI92 SQL-defying LIMIT clause in mSQL 1.x which has now, at least conceptually, crept into both MySQL and PostgreSQL.

Paddy Sreenivasan

Paddy Sreenivasan is responsible for Zmanda’s technical strategy and development of leading open source software products for data protection. Sreenivasan has over 13 years of experience in development and management of software for enterprise storage. In addition, he has worked with various open source communities, including leading the development of an open source high-availability clustering solution. Prior to founding Zmanda, he had key engineering roles at Cisco, SGI and HP. He holds a bachelor's degree from BITS, Pilani, and a master's degree from the University of Pune, India.

Brian Stevens

Brian Stevens, CTO and Vice President of Engineering at Red Hat, has over 20 years of enterprise engineering experience in UNIX and Linux technologies, including work as a developer on the first commercial release of the X Window System. Since joining Red Hat's senior management team in 2001, Stevens has been critical to the company's enterprise operating system, storage, and clustering strategies. Michael Still

Michael Still released his first Open Source project in July 2000, and has been actively developing ever since. He has had a variety of articles published by IBM DeveloperWorks, and once made a Tux out of fairy lights. He is the author of the recently published "Definitive Guide to ImageMagick" from Apress. Michael grew up in Canberra, Australia but now lives and works in Silicon Valley for Google with his wife and two kids.

Lars Thalmann

Dr. Lars Thalmann is the technical lead of replication and backup technology at MySQL. He is leading the design and development of MySQL Backup and the second generation of MySQL Replication with features like cluster replication, row-based replication, conflict handling, and multisource. Dr. Thalmann has also worked with clustering technology for many years and is one of the developers of NDB Cluster, the storage engine used in MySQL Cluster.

Heikki Tuuri

Heikki Tuuri is the creator of the InnoDB transactional storage engine in MySQL. He founded Innobase Oy in 1995 and is the CEO of the company. Tuuri still does much of the InnoDB support and bug fixing, though most of the new code in InnoDB is written by other Innobase Oy developers. Prior to founding Innobase Oy, Tuuri worked as a researcher and teaching assistant at the University of Helsinki, from which he also received a Ph.D, degree in mathematical logic in 1990.

Ari Valtanen

Ari Valtanen has more than 17 years experience in professional software development and delivering innovative products. He co-founded Solid in 1992 and held various senior level positions within the research and development team until 1999. Valtanen served as the company's chief technologist from 1999 to 2000, and as director of product management in 2000. He was named Vice President and Chief Technology Officer in 2001. Valtanen served on the Solid board of directors from 1997 to 1999. Prior to co-founding Solid, Valtanen worked as a developer, architect and consultant in both start-up and established software companies for a number of years. He completed his Master's Thesis while working at the Technical Research Centre of Finland. Valtanen holds a Master of Science degree from the Department of Engineering Physics from the Helsinki University of Technology, with majors in Computer Science and Acoustics.
